For students in our department, there are many scholarships and stipends available, along with co-op, intern and work-study programs available to undergraduate and graduate students. Below we list some scholarships, fellowships, and other assistance available to students in our department.
Department:
Undergraduate:
The Stinson Scholarship Program provides $10,000 scholarships to highly qualified students in our department, and the department also provides a large number of smaller scholarships.
Graduate
The Department of Nuclear Engineering offers financial assistance in the form of non-teaching assistantships, research assistantships, fellowships, and scholarships to incoming graduate students. Assistantships are administered by the department, as are some fellowships.
Assitantships
Assistantships include a stipend (e.g. salary or scholarship to cover health insurance premium) and may include tuition and fees. Available funding is determined each semester by the department funding for Graduate Assistants Non Teaching (GANTS) and the budget of research contracts for Graduate Assistant Research (GARs). Standard assistantship offers to new domestic students commit to paying stipend and tuition and fees for two regular semesters (9 months). There is no commitment for summer. Standard assistantship offers to new international students commit to paying stipends and tuition and fees for one full year (12 months).Students are encouraged to find advisors with research projects that can pay their assistantships as GARs during the first semester.
Research Assistantships
Some research assistantships are offered by the faculty based on the student’s background, research interests, and their match to the faculty’s research projects. Our faculty members are actively involved in a variety of exciting research projects and high-achieving students are often offered research assistantships by the faculty at the time of admission. Other students are advised to contact the faculty in their area of interest for consideration for research assistantships.
Fellowships
In addition, some fellowships are administered by the college and university. Your application for admission automatically results in consideration for all assistantships and fellowships administered by the department, college, and university. Well-qualified students are also encouraged to apply for fellowships from outside organizations (e.g. the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Department of Homeland Security, and others).Almost all of our graduate students receive some sort of financial support.
